On Wednesday 8 May, the North Norfolk Railway will join national commemorations to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, honouring the railways’ critical role during the Second World War. As part of the celebrations, War Department steam locomotive 90775 “The Royal Norfolk Regiment” will be hauling services throughout the day — a powerful tribute to the heritage of wartime rail travel.

A Journey Through History

The railway’s roots lie in the Midland and Great Northern line, which served much of East Anglia until its closure in 1964. Just before the war in 1939, the line was almost absorbed by the LNER (London North Eastern Railway) — a plan halted by the outbreak of hostilities. Instead, the line played a crucial wartime role, transporting troops, supplies, and evacuees as East Anglia became a key location for the war effort.

📍 Weybourne Station, now the central station of the North Norfolk Railway, was especially important. Wartime reports describe how a small J15 locomotive once pulled 14 coaches filled with troops heading to the nearby military camp at Muckleburgh — an extraordinary feat reflecting the strategic importance of local rail.

Why 90775 Matters

The star of the commemorative day, Locomotive 90775, has a history that mirrors the wartime resilience it honours. Built in 1943, this rugged engine was designed for rapid production and global deployment. It served in Egypt during the war, moved on to work in Greece into the 1970s, and was eventually brought home to the UK and preserved — a fitting symbol for a day of remembrance.
