Big News from the Norfolk Coast: Holkham’s New Boardwalk is Open!

There’s something new to discover on the Norfolk coast this season — and it’s perfect for lovers of big skies, sandy strolls, and sweeping sea views!

Holkham Estate has officially opened its brand-new accessible boardwalk leading out to the viewing platform over Holkham Bay. It’s a major upgrade to one of the UK’s most popular coastal walks and a brilliant example of how thoughtful planning and funding can enhance both visitor experience and access to nature.

Spotlight on Holkham Estate

The new boardwalk is part of the Norfolk Coast Path National Trail — one of only 16 National Trails across England and Wales. With over a million visitors each year, the original trail had become heavily worn. Thanks to a £150,000 project completed in March 2025, the route has now been fully refreshed with a durable, non-slip surface made from recycled plastic bottles, designed to last up to 75 years.

Led by Dr Katy Owen, Protected Landscapes Manager at Norfolk County Council and trustee of @norfolktrailsuk, the project was supported through Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) funding and an award from the Norfolk Coast National Landscape. The result? A wider, safer, and fully accessible boardwalk for all — including wheelchair users and families with pushchairs.
