Details

After witnessing a terrible shipwreck just 60 yards off the Yarmouth coast in 1807, Captain George William Manby decided that he would dedicate his life to saving others. The result was the ‘Manby Mortar’: a line-throwing device which Manby used to rescue sailors from a wrecked ship the following year.

Manby went on to become involved in the foundation of what became the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), as well as inventing the first pressurised fire extinguisher.

A talk by Andrew Bowen, Trainee with Norfolk Museums Service.
